3 Year Update

Ok so I know this is late, but I wanted to wait until we had our doctor's appointment so that I could update weights and heights too.  So here goes our lengthy 3 year update on everyone.

Over the years we have had our ups and downs with parenting and with each year this one too has its challenges and joys.  So let's start off with what we love about this age.  One of my favorite things is listening to the girls talk to each other.  I love to hear them have little conversations and actually play together and tell each other what to do, which sometimes works and sometimes starts a fight.  I also love the conversations that they can have with us now.  It is amazing to hear what they are thinking.  For example today we went to the park and Olivia said she wanted to eat and I said we would have to go home and get something.  She looked at me and said but let's go over there and eat as she pointed at some picnic tables.  So in her mind she figured there would be food just 'there' she hasn't quite figured out the whole picture like mommy and daddy have to buy the food and then pack it and bring it here.  It was so cute, and I do wish it just worked that way too Olivia.  Other things that I'm really enjoying is their ability to be helpful.  At mealtime they get out their drinks and silverware and help carry their plates to the table, then after they are done they carry their things to the sink and put away their milk or juice.  They can also dress themselves (well sometimes backwards or inside out but it still counts) and put on their shoes.  All of these things are very helpful.

Now for the challenges, our biggest 2 challenges right now are fighting and whining.  They fight over everything all the time and it is so frustrating.  We don't want to 'police' them all the time so our new rule is 'work it out or go to your room'.  It is pretty effective too bad we can't get it stopped before the yelling starts.  We have also implemented 'Boss of the Day' a few months ago.  We rotate by the day and if you are the boss you get to pick your seat in the van and also be the first to choose the songs we sing at night.  Also whining has become a real problem, they are all overly dramatic about everything.  Examples: Mommy cut my grapes up, Daddy didn't let me open my yogurt, my knife and fork don't match, I wanted to get my own napkin, etc, etc.  Every minute of every day it feels like someone is whining over something, this is a very frustrating stage for Scott and I.

Ok so here is a little more about each girl:

Emma: She is still very outgoing and sweet, she loves to play with older kids especially older girls.  Emma still needs her nap, if she doesn't get it she cries and cries so we try to make sure she gets an hour.  Emma is becoming pretty stubborn and if she doesn't want to do something like pick up something she dropped she won't do it.  She has to go to time-out for her stubbornness sometimes.  Emma is really funny and it is becoming easier to understand her.  We still have trouble with understanding her and if we get it wrong she says with a little attitude, "I'm not talking 'bout that", very cute.  She likes to try to scare her sisters and act like a monster (they don't think it is scary they think it is funny).  Emma has the most upper body strength and loves to play on the rings in the backyard she is able to stand there grab on and do a complete flip without any momentum.  The other two have mastered the skill too but it took a bit longer and they usually need a little jump to help get started. At her appointment she weighed 26 lbs which is 7% for her age, she is very light.  She is 38 inches tall which is 66%.

Olivia: She is the pleaser and tries to help out the most.  She loves her sisters and always wants to play with them and when they won't play with her she gets upset and cries to me that they won't come play.  This is different than in the past as she use to be the one to play alone a lot.  She is still a little clingy and doesn't want to be left at church or the Y but she doesn't seem to mind being left at Preschool.  She loves to draw and actually colors inside the lines now.  She still hums when she is concentrating, it is super cute but I'm sure she will out grow it someday.  She is very easy going and her sisters can often get her to help them with something like picking up a dropped spoon or getting their juice.  She is very pleasant and oftern responds with 'sure' when I ask her to help out.  Olivia gives the biggest and best kisses it is so funny, she pulls back and opens her mouth big and takes a big breath and then she pounces and gives you a big kiss but she is so fast sometimes she misses your mouth.  Olivia is very affectionate.  At her 3 year appointment she weighed 28 lbs which is 22% so a little more than Emma, but not much.  She is the tallest at 38.5 inches at 77%.

Savannah: Savannah talks and acts like a little grown-up, she has started asking lately, "Did God make that?".  She asks this about everything, our house, preschool, the church, the grass, our van, etc.  Another thing she does is ask a lot of questions and then follows it up with 'yes or no'.  Like she'll say "Mommy is Cuddles a girl, yes or no" or she'll ask Emma, "Emma do you want to play this, yes or no".  She loves her little Bible book and likes for us to read it to her, she seems mature for her age.  She is still cuddly at night and most nights she migrates to our bed,Scott usually takes her back to her bed but lately she has been laying at the foot of our bed because then sometimes we don't notice and she gets to stay.  She calls me "mom-a" or "mom-e" instead of mommy sometimes, it is pretty funny how she has learned to change the last letter into different vowels for different sounds.  Savannah is starting to talk back to us and to not listen well, our patience runs thin with her sometimes and she has had to have time-out often lately.  They are all really into games these days so we play matching games, hide the monkey, bean bag toss and their favorite hide and seek. At her 3 year appointment Savannah weighed the same as Olivia 28 lbs which also put her at 22%.  Her height was the same as Emma's at 38 inches which is 66%.
