January 12-16 2009

Ok so this is the week where the shock is wearing off and all I want to do is cry. I find myself crying while I am working or suddenly while I’m on the phone, or while I’m watching TV, or trying to sleep, etc. My sister Amanda put it this way, even though eventually I will think it is a blessing right now I have to mourn for the ‘normal’ pregnancy that I had envisioned. I had imagined I would keep working out and gain the 30-35 pounds and have a cute little pooch and enjoy pregnancy. Now I am suppose to gain 50-60 lbs and eat between 3,000 -4,000 calories a day and I know I will outgrow the ‘cute’ maternity period by the middle of my second trimester. I will also miss out on taking my babies home with me from the hospital and there will be no little outings with my new baby to the store or park, etc.

On another note, I have started reading a good book by Dr. Barbara Luke, it was highly recommended on the triplet forums that I read. I am trying to get in all the food and vitamins that she suggests, but it is tough. First of all my morning sickness is continuing sometimes into the evening and I hardly want to eat anything at all. On the way to work the other day I actually threw up twice while driving, thank goodness I had an empty cup.

Janurary 7-11 2009

It seems like everyone who finds out about the triplets is so excited and tell us what a blessing this is. That is not how we feel at this moment. Scott and I are pretty realistic, I wouldn’t say either of us are optimistic or pessimistic, we are just realistic. So of course we are worried and stressed, we are concerned about finances, insurance (they never cover as much as you think they would), and this overwhelming task that is ahead of us, not to mention all of the things that could go wrong between now and then.

My first reaction is to start researching and finding books to read about having and raising triplets. Scott’s reaction is to pretend nothing is going to change. We spent the next several days not even discussing the issue. Finally by the weekend I was ready to get started planning. I told Scott that we would need to start looking for cars that could fit 3 carseats, oh boy was that the wrong thing to say. He flipped out and said that they would all fit fine in the Rendevous, I knew this was not the case and tried to explain that but since I couldn’t spit out the exact dimensions he refused to believe it. After this big episode we didn’t speak about the ‘triplets’ for days. We went down to my parents on Saturday and between them and Stephanie I took it upon myself to gather 3 infant seats and put them in their vans and my SUV. It didn’t really fit in the vans, and it definitely would not fit in my car, the space between the middle and back seats just doesn’t have enough room. I called Scott so he could see this for himself and apparently he was still not ready to face the fact that our car would not work.

Tues. Jan 6th 2009

Finally time for the first ultrasound, I am still nervous. I am mostly convinced that it is ectopic. They kept us waiting for almost 40 minutes in the waiting room, it was awful we were so anxious. Finally we were called back, she asked if I needed to pee and I was like no, I'm good. So she put the warm gel on my belly and started to look. We could not see anything (not that we would have known what we were looking at anyway) and so I asked her right away if it was ectopic, she said that she didn't think so. She was examining my ovaries at that point and said they were 'overstimulated'. She asked if I had been craming and I said yes, she said that was probably why. I was relieved to hear that there was a reason for my pain and maybe it was going to be ok. I waited a while and finally after lots of silence asked if there was a baby. She said she was going to go look now, so she turned the monitor toward us and told us we were looking for a black spot, like a black hole. She then said how many black circles do you see. I was like is this a trick question, I said, "2?". Scott spoke up at that point and said, umm "3". She said she agreed with Scott that she saw 3. My eyes got big and I was like what does that mean? She could see me panicking so she told me not to get excited, that we still had to confirm that they were viable. So now I have to pee, this is too much excitement for my bladder. When I got back she told me that I was probably only around 6 weeks pregnant (not 10 like we had hoped). So back on the table she started at the top and found a heartbeat on the first sac, you could see the tiny flicker on the screen. The next baby in the middle was a little tougher but she got a heartbeat on that one. Scott and I just stared at each other, I think the only thing I said to him is, "are you ok"? She could not get the heartbeat on the bottom baby. She said it could still develop but we wouldn't know for another week or so. She then took some pictures for us and the doctor, but when she got back to number 3 she said I see a heartbeat. She was so happy, she said it is triplets. So she typed it on our picture Triplets!!!!!!!!!!, needless to say Scott and I were not that enthusastic, but we were glad she was. She said she had never seen triplets this soon in a pregnancy and that in her 20+ years she had only ever seen them once before. Before leaving we scheduled our next appt for Jan. 19th which is when Scott's mom is in town and will be able to come to the ultrasound.

We had scheduled our second viewing of a house at 1pm since I would be home and we could see the foreclosure while it was still light out. The floorplan was almost the same as our house, just bigger and in Union County. We went to view the house and of course the agent asked about my u/s I showed her the picture without saying anything. She studied it for a while then said, "are there 3". I said yes we were having triplets, she was shocked also. We still hadn't called anyone to tell them about our news, even though they had called us both repeatedly. At 3pm I called Stephanie to see if they could come up that night. I wouldn't tell her why and she was worried, but I told her that the baby was ok. She said she would get up with mom and let me know. Stephanie called back and said that mom had taken someone from work to the eye doctor, but that she thought they would be able to come up later. She then convinced me that she really needed to know what was going on. She tried guessing at first, she guessed that it was ectopic, that we were having twins, etc. Finally I gave in and told her, she was stunned, pure silence for a minute, she reassured me that they would get up there that night. Shortly after we hung up my mom called, and said that she was really worried about me. She asked if I needed her to come straight there, I told her no to finish up with her friend then come up later with Stephanie. She said that she was very worried and really needed to know what was going on. I broke down and told her too, her response was funny though she said, "ok no really what is going on Sarah." I told her again, we are having triplets. She said, "that is not funny what is it, are you having twins?". Again I told her no we are having triplets, I said, mom I would joke up twins, I am not joking about triplets. She said, "oh", again more silence. She promised to come up later to see us.

That night we called lots of family to let them in on our secret. Of particular interest were a few conversations: 1) Scott's mom and grandmother: They asked about the appt and we said it was good, his Mem said that she was so excited she loved babies. So I said well how about I have one for you too, and then his mom said that she wanted to have one too, so I said ok, one for you, one for lynn, one for me. They thought we were kidding and kept going on, then Lynn says, "wait how many babies are you having?" 2) My uncle: When his wife told him I was on the phone he picked it up and said, "So Triplets Huh" and I said yes how did you know he said, "What?" Apparently he was just joking around. 3) My aunt pat: Just a side note here. At Christmas when we found out we were expecting she told us she was hoping we had triplets, later she revised this saying she hoped twins for us and triplets for her DIL. We still blame her btw. She completely thought we were kidding with her but when she realized we were serious she said, "well you better call Nikole (her DIL) and tell her she is off the hook"

Dec. 31st 2008

The wait is finally over, we have our first OBGYN appt. today. I have been too scared to take another pregnancy test fearing it will be negative so we are anxious for this appt. Our appt was first thing in the morning which was nice. I peed in the cup and then went back to our room. When the nurse came in I asked her if I was pregnant. She looked at me like I was crazy and was like isn't that why you are here. She said she had not looked at the urine results. I must have made her curious though b/c she left and came back in a minute to say that I was indeed pregnant. Our doctor came in and did an exam, I told him how sore my stomach was and that I had been pretty sick lately. He said that we had not miscarried but the possibility was still there this early. He felt my stomach and I complained that it hurt when he pressed on it. I think this concerned him a little, but mostly I felt like a wuss. He said that these cramping, tender stomach symptoms were consistent with an ectopic pregnancy but that he felt I was at low risk for this. Since we weren't 100% sure of when we got pregnant and we wanted to make sure it was not ectopic they scheduled an ultrasound for us the following week.

The waiting and waiting and not knowing is killing us. Scott and I don't discuss it, but I am concerned that something is not right.

Dec. 25th & 26th 2008

We sent the picture to Scott's parents today and asked that they call us when everyone got there, we then had them check their email. Lynn had already figured it out, but everyone else was surprised.

Christmas Day was great, it was Christmas Day evening that turned out not so great. When we got home around 7pm I was feeling very bad. I went to the bathroom and there was some blood, I was very worried. Shortly after that I started vomiting, not good. This continued until about 6am, I got no sleep. At 8am I called the doctor but they were not open. I was able to get a nurse though and tell her what was going on. She said that they were not concerned at this point but that they would give me some medicine for the vomiting. Scott went to pick that up and also a Chick-fil-A lemonade, yes that was the doctor's orders too.

The Beginning - Dec. 23rd & 24th 2008

This is how it all began...
We had been trying to get pregant for a few months and on the morning of Dec. 23rd, I woke up and wanted to take a pregnancy test, Scott said I shouldn't because he didn't want me to get my hopes up again. I had been having cramps for a few days and my period had not started, since I don't normally cramp I was kind of feeling that it may have worked. This was our second cycle on a low dose of clomid. It was a Tuesday morning and I knew Scott was already downstairs working (it was his day to work from home). I knew that if I didn't take it then I would have to wait for another time he was home in the morning b/c I wanted him to be there. So I took the test and jumped in the shower. When I got out it was definitely positive. I called Scott and told him I took a test and he immediately figured it was negative so he hugged me and said that he told me not to, lol. Then I told him that he was going to be a daddy. He was like what, no, really. I showed him the test and he was excited. Of course we said we wouldn't tell anyone yet so I had to go the whole day and not say anything. My sister Stephanie knew that I thought I might be pregnant so I had promised to call her, that was the only person I was allowed (per Scott) to call and even he was not happy that I had promised to call her.

By the afternoon of the next day (Christmas Eve) I was so tired of keeping the secret and so I asked Scott if we could tell our parents on Christmas. He was apparently too excited to keep the secret so we took a picture of the pregnancy test and framed it, then we wrapped it up and put it under the tree at my grandfather's on Christmas Eve. Stephanie decided it would be funny for her to give it to them since she had just had Jesse 2 weeks earlier. My mom opened the 'gift' and started giving Stephanie a hard time, she was like I hope this is a joke. Stephanie laughed and said, mom it isn't mine...it took her a second but she figured it out. It was nice to be able to finally share our news.
