7/30/2009 - Sarah is admitted to the hospital

After I posted the last blog, things quickly changed for us. Sarah had a follow-up blood pressure check with her OB on Thursday, her mom had spent the night and took her to the hospital to see the babies and to get her bloodpressure check per the orders when she was released on Tuesday. When they took her bloodpressure it was at a very dangerous level, in fact the nurse thought she had made a mistake and had another nurse double check, they told her she could not leave the office or go see the babies until she saw the doctor. They ran some lab work and went through everything in her file. They wanted to rule out pre-eclempsia which was what she had been admitted for before the babies. Though post partum pre-eclempsia is rare it does still happen. Once they could rule that out they could treat her high blood pressure with oral medicine.
Finally around 3pm they decided that it looked like it was just high blood pressure but with numbers like that they could not send her home. So they admitted her to the Matthews hospital and started her on bloodpressure medication. They told her it would be at least 24 - 48 hours before they would consider releasing her. Today they did more blood work and saw something a little concerning so we are here for another night.
As for the babies all of them are doing great, they are right across the hall from Sarah so I get to see them a lot which has been nice. I read them books at night and go over during feedings. Sarah has been able to see them and even breastfeed several times today. The nurses say that Olivia looks a lot like Sarah and that Savannah looks like me (but cuter). The neonatologist also came in this morning and said that he thinks they will be here for another week at least, and only because they need to grow some more. They are almost all back up to their birthrates and will hopefully quickly continue to gain weight and eat all their meals. We love seeing their little personalities come out: Emma is vocal and they call her 'wild woman'. Olivia is very laid back and sleeps a lot. Savannah is our cuddler and our smallest. They have started dressing them in the premie outfits that we brought in, here are a few pictures:

7/29/09 -- 5 days old

Scott here again. Sorry it has been so long since Sarah or I have updated the blog. We can't begin to thank everyone for their support and encouragement throughout Sarah's pregnancy and also now. We appreciate all your prayers and support. Everyone is doing great, but we had a small setback with Sarah on Saturday. She started feeling poorly and then became very sick that night, throwing up several times. They had to restart the IV and confine her to bed for the next 12 hours. She did not get to see the babies on Saturday and that was very hard.
On Sunday things started looking better and she was able to go down and see the babies. We also enjoyed a few visitors on Sunday and Monday. On Monday they told us that if we were interested the babies could be moved to Matthews hospital, they were overcrowded downtown and felt that our babies would benefit from being closer to us and at a facility that wasn't as crowded. We talked to the neonatologist and the benefits to us being able to see the babies more were definitely worth the move. By Tuesday they decided Sarah was well enough to be discharged and they were also ready to move the babies. The babies left in an ambulance at the same time Sarah was discharged, Scott went straight to Matthews hospital to make sure they arrived. Here are a few pictures of them packed up for the trip.

The decision to move them was a great thing for the babies. As it turns out they are the only babies at the NICU in Matthews and so instead of one nurse they have two. The care they receive is just as good and it is a lot easier for Sarah and I to visit them since they are so much closer. The nurses were so excited since this was the first set of triplets ever to spend time in the NICU there.
This morning we went to Matthews and saw the babies, they are doing well. They do have some jaundice so they are getting photo therapy for a few days, they look so cute in their little diapers and very comfy. They did great at feeding today, Emma and Savannah are great at breast-feeding already!

Scott here again. Well it is now 11 in the morning and the girls are now 1 day old. I am sure everyone is wondering how the girls are doing. I will answer that right away and then go into some more details. The girls are doing great and Sarah is doing well also.

Some stats on the girls:

The Oldest
Emma Catherine Roux

17.25 inches
born at 17:31 (5:31 PM)

The Middle Child
Olivia Michelle Roux
4lbs 12.8oz
18 inches
born at 17:33

The Youngest
Savannah Lynn Roux
4lbs 3oz
17 inches
born at 1734

Now that the stats and some pictures are all there for you to see we will go into some more details.

They decided to deliever the babies yesterday when a blood test shows that Sarah's liver was not working well enough. If they did not deliever the babies soon it would start affecting Sarah's health. We were told that the babies were to be born at 5. At around 4:45 they took Sarah and I to the room. I was waiting in the recovery room where they would call me in after they did all of the prep work on Sarah. I then look up and here comes Sarah walking into the recovery room. The doctor had to go deliever another baby first that could not wait their turn. The other baby was being born naturally and ours were going to be born Cesarean so we were bumped. We waited for a few minutes which gave time for the anethesioligst to come talk to Sarah a bit more about what was going to happen. I think this helped Sarah stay a bit calm during this waiting. At around 5:15 the second doctor came in to get started. Within 5 minutes of that the primary doctor came in and they were ready to go. The doctor even mentioned that he had finished watching the video so he was good to go. At around 5:25 they called me into the room.

The room was a large room with Sarah in the middle. There were people everywhere. It was quite the party. In the room we were in there had to have been at least 10 people and in the adjoining room where the babies would be taken there had to have been an additional 15 people. They sat me next to Sarah at her head and I held her hand. She was shaking a little. It was cold in the room and she was nervous. I did my best to put her at ease. The anesthioligst did great helping me to keep Sarah as calm as possible. We sat their waiting and then we heard "It's a girl" then we heard one of the most amazingly sweet sounds I have ever heard when Emma gave her first cry. I hate to admit it, but I had tears of joy. The doctor handed Emma to a nurse into the towel she was holding where she then showed us the baby briefly around the curtain and then raced into the other room where the doctors and nurses quickly went to evaluating her condition. While they did that the doctor continued working. "It's a girl" and another sweet cry. Again we were shown the baby really briefly before it went to the next room. A yell again "It's a BOY" just kidding "It's a girl" and a final cry that was everybit as sweet as the first two.

In the room next door they cleaned up all the babies then they called me in to see them. They were all so cute and so content as they were wrapped up in the blankets. They ran each baby back into the room to see their mommy before they ran them all to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)

After the babies were wheeled off they sent us to the recovery room. We waited there for hours as they worked to get Sarah's blood pressure and the pain of the operation under control. Once she was ready we went to the NICU with the two grandmothers, Steve, and Stephanie. The babies were doing GREAT. They were breathing room air. That means they are 34 week babies breathing on their own. The nurses and doctors are very pleased with how well they are doing. They are constantly monitoring the babies and their vitals. The babies are so cute. Sarah was able to hold Olivia for the first time. She was so happy to be able to hold one.

Here is a picture of Sarah holding Olivia.

July 24th - The BIG day

This is Scott writing today, you know what that means! Here we are July 24th. 34 weeks and a day. 2 weeks past normal for carrying triplets. They are going to be here today. I have had a lot of days where I have looked forward to them being born on: July 4th; Independence day, July 9th; 32 weeks, July 24th; 24th like my Birthday(February 24) and my dad's(April 24).

Sarah had an ultrasound today and the doctor said everything looked great. The babies look happy and healthy. Later she found out that they where going to be born today when the doctor came in and told her that the bloodwork came in and that her liver had elevated enzymes. This is reason enough to deliver them at 34 weeks. As the doctor said "everything past here is just icing on the cake". So today at 5pm the babies will be born. We expect all babies to be over 4 pounds. We expect Emma and Olivia to be pushing 4lbs and 8 ounces each while Savannah will be the smallest at just over 4.

Obviously we don't have pictures yet, but we will post some pics and video as soon as we can. Please keep us in prayer at 5 that everything goes well.

Here are the final pictures of Sarah before the babies are born.

July 21st -- The Waiting Game

Today is Tuesday July 21'st and we are now just two days shy of 34 weeks. I have now been in the hospital for 5 days. The doctors and nurses are very attentive. They are constantly knocking on the door to see me. One comes in to give me pills or water, another to check blood pressure, and of course the dietacian to get my preferences on meals. Then we have the doctor(s) to talk and see if any new symtoms have appeared or to discuss test results with me. At two in the morning they want to take my blood for lab work. Scott calls these nurses the vampires since they only come out at night to get my blood. The food has been acceptable. Not bad, but not a restaurant I would go back to.

We are now in a waiting game. This game entails me laying in bed having them do multiple tests a day. They monitor the babies heart rates while monitoring everything on me. The doctors say that everything is as good as can be expected considering I am carying the triplets. So we are forced to wait for a 'trigger' event, a symptom that is reason enough to deliver the babies.

I have had many guests the past few days. My little sister came by with her husband and the kids yesterday. Bethany even rode around in the wheelchair with me. I was also suprised by my cousins Debbie and Kassee on Sunday. Kim and her mom came by on Monday and then today I saw Tammy from work and Melissa from campbell and her mom. Not to mention my overnight guests, Scott and my mom have taken turns spending the night and tonight is Scott's mom's first night.

I have the privelage of being able to spend 30 minutes a day on the patio outside the room. Yesterday during my visit out there we were able to get a picture of me and my belly.
We still do not know when the babies are going to arrive, but we will keep you up to date.

July 17th -- Hospital Stay

On Tuesday night we received some sad information. My grandfather (paternal) had passed away that afternoon. It was a little surprising even though he had been in the nursing home for 5 years.

On Friday I attended the receiving for my Paw-Paw but was unable to attend at the burial site because it was not wheelchair accessible and also I had an appointment that afternoon. They did a quick ultrasound on the babies and then did a non-stress test (NST) on baby C. This involves monitoring her heart rate, movement, and my contractions. Everything looked great, however when they tested my blood pressure it was pretty high, the highest it has been. They decided they wanted to monitor me for 24 hours at the hospital. So at 3:00 on Friday I was admitted to the hospital.

My blood pressure stayed high on Friday but by Saturday it was normal again, they said I could go home as long as there was no protein in my urine. We figured I would be out of the hospital no later than Sunday morning. On Saturday night the doctor came in and said that I did have some protein and that I have mild pre-eclampsia, this means I will not be going home again before the babies are born.

July 14th -- Hospital visit and appts this week

This weekend we made yet another trip to the hospital. I started having contractions Friday around 7pm and they steadily got worse and more frequent. Around 2am they were still keeping me up so I called the doctor and they sent me to the hospital. Scott and I were very excited that we might see our girls that weekend. However they said I was not dilated and even though I was having contractions every 5 minutes, they were not progressing toward labor. So they gave me some pills to help stop the contractions for comfort and sent me home. We were a little disappointed but glad to keep them cooking a little while longer.

Saturday night Scott's parents came into town, they thought we would have babies or least have them this week, that has unfortunately not worked out. However, they have been extremely helpful.

On Monday I had an appt with my OB, I am measuring 47 weeks pregnant now, 7 weeks overdue! He said that I have not dilated and he doesn't see any reason I can't make it to 36 weeks (that is only 3 weeks away, but feels like an eternity to me). I have been uncomfortable for several weeks now but the underside of my belly is swelling causing lots of discomfort I can hardly sit up because the swollen part is painful when it touches my legs. I think I have crossed over to the 'miserable' state.

On Tuesday I saw the specialist and he measured the babies, Baby A and B are both 4lbs 5oz and Baby C is just under 4lbs. She is lagging behind a bit but they think that her 'growth spurt' is just a little late. Everything else looked great. I asked the doctor when he thought I would deliver and he said that he would have given me an 80% of delivering 2 weeks ago, yet here I am. Apparently I am a statistical abnormality so they just don't have any idea.

Thank you for your continued prayers, please pray baby C will have her growth spurt this week so she can catch up with her sisters and also that I can bear the discomfort through these last few weeks.

Here is a cute picture from Tuesday, this is the foot of Baby B and the face of Baby A. Surprisingly Baby A slept right through all the kicking in her face, lol.

July 7 - Specialist Appt

I had another appointment today with the specialist and everything looks great with the babies. My cervix is now completely open, also called 100% effaced but I am not dilated. They sent me back home though and said that now that we have hit the 32 week mark they will let nature take its course. So this means I will get to stay home on bedrest until I go into labor.

I tried to get the doctor to give me a guess on when I would deliver, but all he would say is that he didn't think I would make it to the 36 week scheduled c-section. However, when he left the room the ultrasound tech said she would be surprised if I made it another week.

We are getting close!
