Tues. Jan 6th 2009

Finally time for the first ultrasound, I am still nervous. I am mostly convinced that it is ectopic. They kept us waiting for almost 40 minutes in the waiting room, it was awful we were so anxious. Finally we were called back, she asked if I needed to pee and I was like no, I'm good. So she put the warm gel on my belly and started to look. We could not see anything (not that we would have known what we were looking at anyway) and so I asked her right away if it was ectopic, she said that she didn't think so. She was examining my ovaries at that point and said they were 'overstimulated'. She asked if I had been craming and I said yes, she said that was probably why. I was relieved to hear that there was a reason for my pain and maybe it was going to be ok. I waited a while and finally after lots of silence asked if there was a baby. She said she was going to go look now, so she turned the monitor toward us and told us we were looking for a black spot, like a black hole. She then said how many black circles do you see. I was like is this a trick question, I said, "2?". Scott spoke up at that point and said, umm "3". She said she agreed with Scott that she saw 3. My eyes got big and I was like what does that mean? She could see me panicking so she told me not to get excited, that we still had to confirm that they were viable. So now I have to pee, this is too much excitement for my bladder. When I got back she told me that I was probably only around 6 weeks pregnant (not 10 like we had hoped). So back on the table she started at the top and found a heartbeat on the first sac, you could see the tiny flicker on the screen. The next baby in the middle was a little tougher but she got a heartbeat on that one. Scott and I just stared at each other, I think the only thing I said to him is, "are you ok"? She could not get the heartbeat on the bottom baby. She said it could still develop but we wouldn't know for another week or so. She then took some pictures for us and the doctor, but when she got back to number 3 she said I see a heartbeat. She was so happy, she said it is triplets. So she typed it on our picture Triplets!!!!!!!!!!, needless to say Scott and I were not that enthusastic, but we were glad she was. She said she had never seen triplets this soon in a pregnancy and that in her 20+ years she had only ever seen them once before. Before leaving we scheduled our next appt for Jan. 19th which is when Scott's mom is in town and will be able to come to the ultrasound.

We had scheduled our second viewing of a house at 1pm since I would be home and we could see the foreclosure while it was still light out. The floorplan was almost the same as our house, just bigger and in Union County. We went to view the house and of course the agent asked about my u/s I showed her the picture without saying anything. She studied it for a while then said, "are there 3". I said yes we were having triplets, she was shocked also. We still hadn't called anyone to tell them about our news, even though they had called us both repeatedly. At 3pm I called Stephanie to see if they could come up that night. I wouldn't tell her why and she was worried, but I told her that the baby was ok. She said she would get up with mom and let me know. Stephanie called back and said that mom had taken someone from work to the eye doctor, but that she thought they would be able to come up later. She then convinced me that she really needed to know what was going on. She tried guessing at first, she guessed that it was ectopic, that we were having twins, etc. Finally I gave in and told her, she was stunned, pure silence for a minute, she reassured me that they would get up there that night. Shortly after we hung up my mom called, and said that she was really worried about me. She asked if I needed her to come straight there, I told her no to finish up with her friend then come up later with Stephanie. She said that she was very worried and really needed to know what was going on. I broke down and told her too, her response was funny though she said, "ok no really what is going on Sarah." I told her again, we are having triplets. She said, "that is not funny what is it, are you having twins?". Again I told her no we are having triplets, I said, mom I would joke up twins, I am not joking about triplets. She said, "oh", again more silence. She promised to come up later to see us.

That night we called lots of family to let them in on our secret. Of particular interest were a few conversations: 1) Scott's mom and grandmother: They asked about the appt and we said it was good, his Mem said that she was so excited she loved babies. So I said well how about I have one for you too, and then his mom said that she wanted to have one too, so I said ok, one for you, one for lynn, one for me. They thought we were kidding and kept going on, then Lynn says, "wait how many babies are you having?" 2) My uncle: When his wife told him I was on the phone he picked it up and said, "So Triplets Huh" and I said yes how did you know he said, "What?" Apparently he was just joking around. 3) My aunt pat: Just a side note here. At Christmas when we found out we were expecting she told us she was hoping we had triplets, later she revised this saying she hoped twins for us and triplets for her DIL. We still blame her btw. She completely thought we were kidding with her but when she realized we were serious she said, "well you better call Nikole (her DIL) and tell her she is off the hook"
